General Weight Loss Diets
There is no magic secret to losing weight or dieting. The formula is, has always been, and always will be: calories burned > calories taken in.
Therefore, if you are dieting or losing weight, your main objective is to take in less calories than you burn in a given day.
How many calories do you burn in a day?
Your basal metabolic rate is the number of calories you’d burn if you stayed in bed all day. Now, ideally, if you are trying to diet and lose weight, you are not staying in bed all day. But understanding your BMW gives you your ‘worst case scenario’. Basically, if you know your BMW, you can figure out about how many calories you should eat in a given day. Chances are you burn more than your BMW suggests since you do things like walk around the office, go get your mail, clean the house, etc. So knowing your ‘worst case scenario’ numbers helps you plan a formula for success.
There is a great website that will calculate your BMR for you. To calculate your basal metabolic rate, visit http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html
Unfortunately, your BMR changes as you get older. You may have noticed that it’s harder to lose weight the older you get, that is because your BMR slows down, and you burn less calories in a given day then you did in previous years.
Counting Calories
Getting familiar with how many calories are in your favorite foods is a great way to start understanding how the foods you eat affect your overall health and weight. There are many free online calorie counters. I recommend using these free services so you can see the actual amount of calories you are eating in given day. I would be willing to take a gamble and say that you are eating a substantially higher amount of calories than you think.

Don’t go crazy getting exact numbers or finding the exact type of food you are eating. Find a similar food or beverage to get an idea of where you stand. If possible, write down the amount of calories you eat each day for a few days. Chances are you will be saying, “wow!” by the end of the experiment.
